BOD Selection Procedures 

General Information

Before beginning, make sure to read over the Selection Procedures, as well as the MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership Board of Delegates Expectations and Responsibilities. These are vital to your success as a prospective Board of Delegates (BOD) member, and you will be required to agree to them at the end of your application. Please read all of the details below regarding this application form.

Please make sure to complete the application in full and make sure that all required documents are attached and your video submission is functioning correctly.

The online application must be completed no later than the stated due date to be considered as a candidate.

Selection Procedures

Each board applicant will be evaluated on a three-part process in order to be selected: application, interview, and election.

  • Each applicant must submit an application that will be scored by the outgoing Executive Officers (if an officer is re-elected to another term, they will not be permitted to review the applications) and will count for 33.3% of the candidate's total election score. The video component is considered part of the application portion.
  • Each applicant must go through an interview process with the newly selected Executive Officers via phone call or video chat. The interview will be scored and will count for 33.3% of the candidate's total election score.
  • Each applicant will be placed on a ballot for the current Michigan Student Board of Delegates to vote on. A majority vote for a candidate in each center will count as 33.3% of the total election score.

Eligibility and Seating

Any student that is currently in 9th or 11th grade is eligible to run for a seat as a center representative as an "At-Large Bid". Only current Sophomores can run for center specific seats to keep a consistent balance in elections. Students must be part of an MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership Member School during the year they run for a spot and the year(s) that they hold terms. Students must currently be in good standing in either a student council/government, leadership class, or honor society to continue selection processes for the Board of Delegates. A school can have one (1) main candidate seeking a seat, however, if a particular Center has multiple seats open and not enough schools are interested in providing candidates, additional candidates from interested schools will be accepted. Preference will be given to each school's top-scoring candidate first, then any seats still available will go to the next high-scoring candidate. Questions about this should be directed to the MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership Director.

Responsibilities of the Board of Delegates

While a large part of the job is bringing your own ideas and thoughts, there are some things that all board members must participate in. Know that this description is subject to change. The MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership Director will track and communicate the progress of each BOD member. Before applying, carefully consider the commitment that you will make to students in Michigan--and make sure that it is a realistic expectation for you at this time.

Students on the Board of Delegates will:

  • Attend all meetings of the MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership BOD. This is including (but not limited to) a Board retreat (late spring/early summer), business meetings in Fall (September) and Winter (January), as well as an awards meeting in early Spring. Additional meetings, and other communications may be set by BOD at any time. Check their online communication regularly. Much of the MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership business is conducted in electronic forums including (but not limited to) e-mail, websites, webinars, and the MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership website. If an internet connection is not available at home--getting creative will be necessary! (Try a library, school, or local business with free internet connections.)
  • Promote MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership programs, websites, charities, and events in your area. This will require networking and creative communication with the other BOD representatives from your Center.
  • Write 'blog' articles for the MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership website, social media outlets, and student newsletters. As an 'expert' student involved in activities, you should share your insight, ideas, and thoughts on current topics.
  • Attend the MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership State Student Leadership Conference during your term. Board members will work with the host school on themes, logistics, and other duties as assigned both prior to and during the convention.
  • Attend the MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership Summer Leadership Workshop during their term. This is a vital time to grow in your own walk of leadership--while networking with those that you represent.
  • Attend no less than two (2) Leadership Training Institutes as a facilitator (Oct/Nov). Board members will work over the summer and early fall with volunteers to develop and write curriculum for these conferences.
  • Promote and attend MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership conferences and events. This may include one-day conferences, webinars, or special events. Board members will give input on recent events and brainstorm topics for future events.
  • Attend the local Regional CONNECT Conference (Feb/Mar.) in your area to promote MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership, the State Conference, openings on the Board of Delegates, and State Charity Donations. Board members will work with the host school to facilitate successful programs.
  • Receive mileage reimbursement when traveling to business or award meetings, and Leadership Training Institutes that you facilitate. Mileage will be reimbursed to BOD members who do not travel with their schools to Regional and State Conferences. Mileage Rate will be determined at current MASSP volunteer rate. Transportation is always the responsibility of the BOD member, with agreements signed by their parent/guardian, MASC/MAHS Michigan Student Leadership adviser, and building principal stating understanding. NOTE: Mileage will not be reimbursed to the Summer Leadership Camp, State Conference, or Regional CONNECT Conferences.)
  • Represent Michigan at the National Association of Student Councils/ National Honor Society conferences and events when asked or available.
