Article by Dan Arment President, Michigan Association of Honor Societies In a time where the economy of the United States is struggling, many people have to make tough financial decisions. America was once believed to be a prosperous nation, where families could go to live the American dream. What has become of the American dream? For me, the ongoing financial battle in this country does not represent the dream. Everyday we hear about hundreds of people who lose their jobs, and others struggling to make ends meet when inflation has increased the cost of living. It is a sad time in the state of Michigan right now, but something can be done about it. That change can come from the leaders from throughout the state. As student leadership organizations, we have the power to bring about change to the country. Each year, the state Board of Delegates chooses one special charity in the state to be the state charity of the year. This year our focus is on Penrickton Center for Blind Children. Penrickton is a special facility, and the work they perform there is amazing. Each week they operate as a Monday through Friday residential center for disabled children. The children that come to Penrickton are strong willed individuals, not only living blind, but also with other disabilities. Imagine for a second not being able to see what is going on in the world around you, and not being able to control your movements. That is a tough situation for anyone to be placed in. The staff at Penrickton works with each child individually to develop other senses to help them live a normal life. An amazing thing about Penrickton is that they receive absolutely no state funding; they operate 100% on whatever funds they receive from donations. Think about that for a moment: the services that they offer to their children are completely free, and they receive no funding. How is it possible for that to happen? In today’s world, it is especially important that we as LEADERS do something to help these children. This year, the state Board of Delegates has set a special fundraising goal for this year. The board challenges at least one-hundred member schools to raise a minimum of $1 per each student in your school. Now, we know it is not possible for everyone to complete this goal. However, keep in mind that every little donation helps. At Penrickton, they do their best to stretch out every dollar they receive, so you can be assured that your money is going to good use. Though the MASC/MAHS website at mascmahs.org, we will be keeping track of the challenge. Be proud of your accomplishments, and show them off to the other students around the state of Michigan. Let everyone know what activities you are doing to raise money. Some simple ideas are a bake sale, Christmas baby-sitting, Powerbuff volleyball, and dodge ball game. These are just a few ideas; anything is a possibility. If you want more information, please do not hesitate to visit the Penrickton website at www.penrickton.com. In addition, the Community Relations Director, Janet Ames, is willing to visit any school that would like to have a presentation about Penrickton. In this tough economic time, we ask you to open up your hearts, and give the children at Penrickton the life that they deserve.
