Academy Curriculum
The MASC/MAHS Student Activity Adviser Academy, while shaped around government and council groups, is beneficial for any club or activity adviser as well as school administrators. Our academy will dive into the nuts and bolts of how to develop an organization, working with administration on activities, best practices in a changing environment, as well as ways to do things both TIME and COST efficient (something that has eyes lighting up across Michigan!).
The role of the adviser is to guide students in the learning process of leadership, not to do the work for them. Student groups play a powerful role in school climate and overall student success. Without the necessary framework, a student group will fail to contribute positively to their school and community. However, with an adviser that can guide learning and experiences, students shine! This program is VERY popular with MASC/MAHS member advisers, you will not want to miss it! The topics presented in 2011 are:
- Membership Structure
- Short-term and Year-long Planning
- Election or Selection Options
- Maintaining Archives
- Leadership Curriculum (lessons and activities)
- Selection process by the Faculty Council
- Discipline, probation, dismissals
- Executive officer selection and obligations
- Service Projects
- Student Ownership
- Unique student cases and concerns
- Goal Setting for Groups
- Technology tools
- Resources
Advisers will also be introduced to the other programs and services that MASC/MAHS can provide for them. The program will be facilitated by Tom Heethuis, Principal at Dakota High School. Tom, a longtime friend, adviser, and stakeholder in MASC/MAHS has filled his career with opportunities to work with the students and advisers who care about student leadership in Michigan schools. In his tenure, Tom has served as an educator, an administrator, a camp director (on both the state and national level) a speaker, workshop developer, and activity guru--giving participants a 360 degree look at student activities no matter the group, size, or location. You WILL learn a lot, this is a popular session!
