The Michigan Association of Student Councils and Honor Societies Believes in Miracles!

Our 2011-2012 MASC/MAHS Charity of the Year is home grown. With roots to longtime member school Troy Athens High School Believe in Miracles exemplifies student leadership to its core showing students how to help students in need. We encourage you to read below to find more information, and find out how you can help this worthy cause.

The Mission

The mission of Believe in Miracles is to enrich the lives of Michigan children suffering from life-threatening medical conditions by buying gifts and bringing joy and hope to their lives. Believe in Miracles is a grass roots organization founded in 2005 by two 11 year old boys whose goal was to bring a smile to the face of a child that is suffering. Believe in Miracles was created to let children and their families know that they are not alone in their battles, that we are praying for them and fighting for them. Believe in Miracles strives to be an excellent steward of our donors’ money. We are run by all volunteers working from home to keep overhead at a minimum. The proceeds are used to purchase gifts and trophies for children who are suffering.

The Inspiration: Jenna's Story

Jenna Kast was a very happy and active girl whose smile would light up a room and whose giggle couldn’t help but make you smile. As the youngest of three children, Jenna never had a problem keeping up with her older brother and sister. Jenna loved to dance, sing and play soccer and softball. She would always cheer on her brother and sister at all of their sporting events. Jenna enjoyed spending time with her cousins and friends too. She was the happiest when surrounded by friends and family.

Jenna was only 3½ years old when she was diagnosed with an ependymoma brain tumor. She fought courageously for 8 years enduring eight brain surgeries, three 6-week rounds of radiation and three clinical trials consisting of different chemotherapy treatments. All the while Jenna never lost her enthusiasm for life. She would continually say, “I know God has a plan for me.” On July 4th, 2010 God called Jenna home. We miss her dearly but continue to feel her presence all around us.

The History

Believe in Miracles was founded in 2005 by then 5th graders, Brett Kast (Troy Athens Student) and J.D. Sterba. (MASC/MAHS Summer Camp alumnus). The inspiration came from Brett’s youngest sister Jenna who was battling brain cancer. While Brett and his sister Nancy would accompany Jenna on her trips to Children’s Hospital, Brett became increasingly aware of the suffering and hardships many children face.

As a result, he became determined to help these children in some way. Brett had undoubtedly been influenced by the kindness and support that his family received from the community during their most trying times. After discussing the idea with his friend, JD, the two 10 year old boys came up with a plan to design and sell wristbands. The money raised from the sale of the bracelets would be used to buy a gift for a child that was suffering, with the hope that they could forget about their illness for a while. “I think that’s what God wants us to do,” said Brett. “I think that’s what we’re supposed to do.”

The Specifics

MASC/MAHS is excited to see how our member schools will reach out to a local home-grown cause such as this one. All year, we have been excited to see how you have been raising money and sharing the story of Believe in Miracles. Charity donations that will be counted towards the MASC/MAHS Star School Award or to be considered for the MASC/MAHS Tonya Charity Award must be RECEIVED by Believe in Miracles no later than Friday, March 16, 2011.(Please note: Applications for these awards may be due PRIOR to this deadline, however, this is the date that donations must be in to the charity office. All charity donations MUST be accompanied by the MASC/MAHS Donation Form to be considered for award programs.. Donations that schools continue to collect past the deadline will be accepted and appreciated!

MASC/MAHS Principal of the Year Award

The student-principal relationship is a special one. Michigan secondary schools are filled with administrators that recognize the importance of student activities in their buildings. Support for advisers, a listening ear for student leaders, and resources for groups are all signs of a principal or assistant principal that is deserving of recognition from the student activities in your building. The MASC/MAHS Principal of the Year award recognizes this groups of people.

About the MASC/MAHS Principal of the Year

The backbone of the school, the Principal, can be nominated by a student group in their building for tremendous support of the leadership program and the school community. Student Leadership opportunities exist because administrators understand the value of leadership development and student ownership in schools. It is important that students have the opportunity to recognize these school leaders. MASC/MAHS recognizes one outstanding middle school principal or high school principal from each of the 12 geographical centers/regions (for a center map, head to www.mascmahs.org/membership). From these center award winners, ONE principal will be named the MASC/MAHS Principal of the year. The center and state winners are selected by the MASC/MAHS Board of Delegates.

Policies and Procedures

No Board of Delegate member may participate in a Center's selection if his/her principal is a candidate. Recognition of the winners from each Center will take place at the State Student Conference.  No principal who has been honored with this award may be considered again until five (5) years after receiving the award. The candidate must be serving as a principal, assistant principal, or other administrator at the building level (dean of students, etc..) in a junior high, middle school or high school that is a current member of  MASC/MAHS. (Are you unsure if your school is a member? Contact 517/327-5315 or head to www.mascmahs.org/membership.) Director of student activities and related positions are NOT eligible for this award, please nominate them for the Adviser of the Year. In addition, the candidate must also be a current member of MASSP. There may be only one applicant per school.

A member of the student group's executive board must submit a recommendation that touches on why this candidate is worthy of receiving the MASC/MAHS Center Principal of the Year Award. The committee will be looking for specific examples of how this candidate moves the school and its student leaders forward. There is no need to reiterate the candidate's resume items. Focus on the impact the candidate has had on students, the student leadership activities, the school as a whole and the surrounding community. The letter is limited to TWO pages, typed, double-spaced. The board member must sign the recommendation letter.

Part Four: Adviser Recommendation
ONE of the student group’s who comprise the MASC/MAHS school must have an adviser submit a recommendation that touches on why this candidate is worthy of receiving the MASC/MAHS Center Principal of the Year Award. The committee will be looking for the adviser to provide evidence/examples of the principal’s work/efforts/successes. There is no need to reiterate the candidate's resume items. Focus on the impact the candidate has had on the students, the council, the school as a whole and the surrounding community. The letter is limited to TWO pages, typed, double-spaced. The adviser must sign the recommendation letter.

Part Five: Candidate Response
In order to allow this award to be submitted as a surprise to the candidate, we have created a prompt that you may disguise that the candidate needs to write a response to. The nominee must reply to the following statement: “Why are student activities important in our middle and/or high schools?” This statement is limited to TWO pages, typed, double-spaced. The candidate must sign the statement.

MASC/MAHS Adviser of the Year Award

MASC/MAHS programs and events would not be possible without the tireless work of volunteers, advisers, and sponsors. Each year, we like to give schools the opportunity to recognize those adults in education who go above and beyond to serve student activities in their building.

About the MASC/MAHS Adviser of the Year

Student Activities are heavily supported and guided by advisers in the schools. It is important that students have the opportunity to recognize these influential men and women. MASC/MAHS will recognize one outstanding honor society, student council, or leadership class adviser from each of the 12 centers/regions (see which center you are in at www.mascmahs.org/membership). From those award recipients, one that stands out above the rest will be honored as the state Adviser of the Year. If eligible for advancement, nominee will be nominated at the national level.

Policies and Procedures

MASC/MAHS Student of the Year Award

The students that we work with are the backbone of what we do at MASC/MAHS. Those who have filled their time in middle and high school with promoting work to better their communities, grow their schools, and live their passions deserve to be recognized. Our annual way of honoring our graduating seniors is with the MASC/MAHS Student of the Year.

About the MASC/MAHS Student of the Year

The 2011-2012 Board of Delegates voted in January to RETIRE the Torchbearer and Patricia C. Boss Awards, and move the student recognition towards the shape of MASC/MAHS. In 2012 ONE Student of the Year will be selected from a member school involved in student council/government, class council, leadership class, or honor society. This student will be selected from applications received and will be chosen by the  MASC/MAHS Board of Delegates. Recognition of the winner will take place at the MASC/MAHS Student State Conference in March. Up to twelve finalists in the process will be recognized at the banquet Sunday evening.

Policies and Procedures

This award is only open to graduating seniors. Students on the MASC/MAHS Board of Delegates (current or former) are not eligible to receive this award. The candidate must be enrolled in a high school that is a current member of MASC/MAHS (If you are unsure about whether your school is a member of MASC/MAHS contact 517/327-5315 or head to www.mascmahs.org/membership). There may be only one applicant per member high school.

MASC/MAHS STAR School Award

MASC/MAHS has some amazing member schools. You are taking student leadership to a new level all over the state of Michigan. The MASC/MAHS STAR School award recognizes those schools who are doing the most to further the causes of MASC/MAHS in programming, membership, and leadership within the organization.

About the MASC/MAHS STAR School Award

Unlike some of our other awards, the STAR School award is designed to show a combined student leadership effort throughout the entire student body. Member schools can earn points by attending conferences, contributing content, hosting conferences, or having a student step up as a leader within the organization. The MASC/MAHS STAR Schools are the ones that we look upon to mentor new schools to the association and push our programs and events to the next level. In order to be eligible to receive the 2012 MASC/MAHS STAR School Award, a school must have an active MASC/MAHS membership (click here for more information, or to check your school's status) AND acquire TEN (10) points from the tiers listed here. Feel like you've missed the boat? Many of the ways to earn points are still available, so be sure to check out your options below! Schools MUST apply and calculate their points on the online form no later than 11:59pm on 3/1/12. Late submissions will not be accepted.

How to Earn Points

There are a number of ways to earn points. Check these out to see what your group has done, or even complete some of them for additional points!

The following things are worth ONE (1) point each

Submitting a bid for the 2012 Award of Excellence
Submitting a nomination for the Exceptional Service Project
Nominating a graduating senior for Student of the Year
Nominating one of your activity adviser's for Adviser of the Year
Nominating your building's principal or assistant principal for Principal of the Year
Awarding a student in your school the (BRAND NEW) Unsung Hero Award
Making a donation to Believe in Miracles
Having a student (NOT on the MASC/MAHS Board of Delegates) attend a conference/event (including 2011 Summer Camp, 2011 Executive Forum, 2011 Fall Training Institute, 2012 Regional CONNECT Conferences, 2012 Student State Conference, or 2012 JAM Conference). One point will be awarded per event that you had at least one non-board member attend.
Having an adviser or administrator from your school attend a conference/event. (Including 2011 Adviser Academies, as a staff member to the 2011 summer camp season or the 2012 Annual Advisers Conference). One point will be awarded for every conference that an an adviser was in attendance for (not PER adviser).

The following things are worth TWO (2) points each

Submit a feature, story, or idea for www.mascmahs.org (Still want to submit something? Click here to do it online INSTANTLY!
Getting 90% of your student council, honor society, or leadership class (or any combination of them) to "like" MASC/MAHS on Facebook!
Host, or applied to host a Regional CONNECT Conference in 2012.
Apply to host the 2013 Student State Conference (both High School and JAM)
Host the Student State Conference in 2012, or the JAM 2012 Conference
Arrange to have MASC/MAHS speak at your district, league, or school meeting to recruit new members
Had two or more students and/or advisers attend an MASC/MAHS fundraiser (2011 "Mr. K" Scholarship @ Noodles, 2012 Believe in Miracles @ Noodles, 2012 State Conference @ BWW's)
Have a student run for the 2012-2013 Board of Delegates (currently sitting BOD members do NOT count for this)
Nominate a charity for the 2012-2013 MASC/MAHS Charity of the Year.

The Application

Use the above lists to track how many points your building will have. Select a student or adviser who is responsible to collect responses from student council, leadership class, and honor society. Groups will not get double points for having more than one group earn the item (i.e. if both student council and honor society attended a Fall Training Institute, that would only count once on the application). This person should complete the online application to certify to MASC/MAHS what points you have earned in 2011-2012. Please read carefully, and submit truthful answers.

The MASC/MAHS spring Regional CONNECT conferences have a rich history of bringing student leaders together to share the BEST ideas, while having a great time! This year proves to be no exception. No matter whether you are brand new to MASC/MAHS or have been a member for many years, each year the theme, content, and schedule is dictated by our host school--and provided by YOU! Read below for more information on how to get involved in the Regional CONNECT Conference in your area!

Hello Wayne County! Warren Mott High School is proud to host the Wayne County MASC/MAHS Regional Connect Conference on Friday, March 2 at Madonna University in Livonia. We are bringing the best of MACOMB COUNTY out to Livonia to mix with the very best schools in WAYNE COUNTY! This is a big move for us and we are fired up at the chance! We’re stepping out of our comfort zone and we are asking you to step out of yours. At this year’s Regional Connect Conference, we’ll be reminding you that YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE so make the most of it. We want to as many of you to come to our conference as possible. Get ready to GET ENERGIZED as soon as you get off the bus! In addition, we are encouraging every school to send at least one presenter group to the conference, preferably more. Click the link at the bottom of this page to apply to be a presenter. Student Presentation Showcase

The cornerstone of the Regional CONNECT Conferences is the STUDENT PRESENTATION SHOWCASE. We encourage ALL schools who attend to submit a 40 minute student-led presentation that answers the question "What does your school do best?". This is an opportunity not only for your advanced leaders to show off the fruits of your labor, but also for others to collect fresh new ideas for their school. Topics are not limited to simply student council, leadership class, or honor society topics--the freedom is up to you! We've listed a few topics below for you to get the "juices flowing" in your brain:

Interactive Meeting Ideas
Service and/or Philanthropy Projects
Spirit Activities in your Building
Teamwork and Leadership Activities Used

Presentations should be well-developed, rehearsed, and ready for a regional audience. Advisers should review the presentation prior to bringing it to the conference. A basic outline and presenter information will be due to MASC/MAHS in advance (see below). All presentations will be guaranteed one presentation time (40 minutes), however at some sites, certain presentations may be asked to present twice. All presenters should be ready with materials for up to 100 people.

A note about technology: MASC/MAHS is always looking for new ways to use technology in our events and services, however--in the case of Regional CONNECT presentations, we caution you to use it wisely. Projectors, screens, audio equipment, and computers will NOT be available from MASC/MAHS or the host school, and the presenters should be prepared to present in a number of different types of spaces (not all of our Regional CONNECT sites will have classrooms). It is for this reason, that we urge you to reflect on the impact that a PowerPoint or other presentation may have. If you were a student in your session, would YOU be engaged in a session where the presenters read off of the slides? Consider what other visual aids you may be able to use to make your impact greater. NOTE: Any A/V charges incurred by the presenter if additional materials are requested on-site will be passed along to the registered school This can be expensive, so please be prepared!

The MASC/MAHS Board of Delegates, supervised by MASC/MAHS staff will be attending and evaluating student sessions for constructive feedback. The best presentations will be invited to bring their presentation to the 2012 MASC/MAHS Student State Conference.

Presenters need to have their information to MASC/MAHS one week in advance. The presentation deadline for CONNECT: Livonia is Friday, February 24, 2012.

Registration, Fees, and Materials

The cost for the Livonia Regional CONNECT Conference is set at the following:

$30.00 for MASC/MAHS member Schools
$40.00 for non-member schools

Registration covers a morning snack, full lunch, admission, activity materials, and a take-home folder from the day. Advisers will be invited to participate in round-table discussions and other activities planned by the host school. A paid adviser or chaperone is required for each group. To guarantee space for your group please complete your online registration no later than February 24, 2012.

Cancellations, Payments, and Other Details

Cancellations will not be accepted after the registration deadline. For one-day conferences such as this, substitutions may be made anytime, but after the deadline, your building will be invoiced for the full amount.
MASC/MAHS invoices schools monthly for uncollected funds. We encourage advisers/chaperones to bring any payment outstanding the day of the conference to eliminate confusion.
Payment will be accepted via cash, check or money order anytime. Checks should be made out to MASSP Student Leadership and may be mailed to the office or brought in-person to the conference.
Credit or debit card payments may be made over the phone at 517-327-5315 (Monday-Thursday 8a-5p, Friday 8a-4p). Please allow up to 10 business days for processing of phone payments.

MASC/MAHS Exceptional Service Project Award

Service is one of the key concepts that make student activities the excellent organizations that they are. Whether you are an honor society where service is the cornerstone of your calendar, a student government group that showcases service on a regular basis, or a leadership class that uses their time during the school day to give back to your community--MASC/MAHS wants to recognize those groups who are performing interesting and innovative service opportunities.

About the Exceptional Service Project

The MASC/MAHS Exceptional Service Project Award is an opportunity for all of our member schools to showcase a service project they have completed. ANY service project, big, small, complex, simple, there are no limits to which service project can be submitted! The project does not have to be original, unique, or special in any way. In 2011-2012, this is no longer strictly open to honor society chapters. Any MASC/MAHS member student council, leadership class, honor society, or student organization (or any combination of the above) may submit to be recognized. The committee is looking for well-organized projects that challenge the student group and serve the community in some way. Schools that submit high-quality applications will be awarded with the Exceptional Service Project Award at the MASC/MAHS State Conference. Each year, up to ten (10) Exceptional Service Projects are awarded.

The Nomination Process

The service project that you nominate must take place no earlier than April of the PREVIOUS school year
and must be fully completed by the time this nomination is submitted THIS school year. Schools cannot use the same service project if they have nominated it for the Exceptional Service Project in the past FIVE school years (check with MASC/MAHS if you are unsure!).

Keep these tips and tricks in mind before submitting your nomination!

Awards must be submitted in a large document envelope (no binder!)
Dividers should be used before EACH of the four (4) sections listed below. (a sheet of paper is OK!)
DO NOT permanently bind pages together, DO NOT use sheet protectors (unless it is needed for pages with pictures, advertisements, etc...), and DO NOT staple pages together. The committee may need to pull apart the application sections and sheet protectors, permanent bindings and staples make that very difficult!
Of the four (4) main sections, only Section 3 has sub-sections, clearly noted below. Each of these subsections should start on a NEW page within that tabbed section. Each new page should be titled to match the sub-section titles given below.
Advisers should ADVISE the process. Students should be WRITING the nomination. Advisers should not be writing the nomination. This is a student process.
Make sure your nomination arrives to the Lansing office no later than 3/1/12. We do not accept fax or electronic submission of this award. Late submissions will be returned, ungraded.

MASC/MAHS Award of Excellence

The highest honor that an organization within one of our member schools can earn is the Award of Excellence. For more than 20 years, MASC/MAHS has been awarding this honor to the BEST student groups in the state of Michigan. Recently, the MASC/MAHS board recognized that ALL student groups part of a member school should be eligible to bid for the Award of Excellence, so now student councils (including class councils) honor societies, AND leadership classes from the same school may all bid for the honor.

What IS the Award of Excellence?

Developed by Michigan leadership educators and student leaders, and reviewed each year, the Award of Excellence is an opportunity to review your student group in its entirety. You will look at how your group is organized, how you complete processes, how you plan projects, and even how you work on collecting information for the (sometimes daunting) bid packet. Rather than being called an application, the process is called "bidding" for the award, since we are looking at your process of presenting information--rather than coming in and judging your actual processes. Schools that consistently receive the award are the schools that take a team approach to their bid process. Read below for even more tips and tricks!

The Bidding Process

Any MASC/MAHS member school leadership class, honor society, or student council may bid for the award. The bid packets below contain TONS of information, rules, and regulations. We urge you to read through the award at length and organize your team PRIOR to beginning your process. In the past, the groups who were the most organized, and who FOLLOWED the directions faithfully were the ones who walked away with the award.There are 600 possible points for the Award of Excellence bid, you must receive 95% of the possible points (a score of 570 or higher) in order to successfully win the award. Middle schools and junior high groups have their own bid packet, however ALL schools will use the same rubric for grading.The MASC/MAHS deadline for ALL awards (including the Award of Excellence) is March 1, 2012. This is the "recieved by" date, not the postmark date. Electronic and faxed applications are not accepted.

Tips and reminders

One of the KEY concepts of the Award of Excellence process is teaching our student groups to be DILIGENT and DETAILED. However, each and every year we have high quality group's bid packs that miss the award cutoff by simple oversights. You can control this! Develop a process for your group to make sure you don't miss ANYTHING small, and that the committee is grading your work on merit alone. Below we have highlighted some reminders that are often overlooked.

Your award should NOT be bound in any way. The award will not be returned to you in hard copy, instead, a digital PDF scan of the document will be returned with results. It is for this reason that binders, oversized pages, clear protective sheets, and extra "frills" should not be included with your bid pack. We want to judge your award from its content rather than its appearance.
If you are in a group that has an alternate structure (i.e. you don't use treasurer's reports) give us the CLOSEST alternative. With having a large scope of student organizations completing the award--it is hard to find terms that everyone uses.
Don't pick your FLASHIEST projects to highlight, pick the projects that you are able to describe and illustrate the best.
Since each school can have up to three bids (honor society, leadership class, and student council) why don't you invite a group from your school that has never participated in the process? This could be a great bridge-builder for your group, and you could share proof-reading capabilities!
Assume that the committee knows NOTHING about your school or activity. (In many cases, they won't!) Assumptions are the FASTEST way to losing points.
Request your check early. One of the reasons that the application fee is involved is to prove that your group has a proper financial management system in place. Late checks WILL NOT be accepted.

Check, double-check, triple check your bid packet. Check it against the general information section. Did you check it? Good! Have another group member check it! Have someone from outside your organization check it. Check it against the rubric (that's why we give it to you!). Check it for completion. Check it for spelling and grammar. Check it for page numbers. Check it! (We think you get the picture.)
Advisers should ADVISE the process. Students should be WRITING the bid. Advisers should not be writing the bid. This is a student process.

What IS Character?

Below are some thoughts from MASC/MAHS Board of Delegates member Rachel Roe, a senior at Livonia Churchill High School.

As a senior in high school, I have done a lot of growing up over the past four years. I’ve had many new experiences, I’ve made long-lasting friendships, and I’ve had opportunities that I would have never expected in a million years. I’ve made wonderful memories, but there are also things that I wish never happened. But the most important realization that I have made is that character is more than just a nine letter word. Character is what has defined me, and separated me from a lot of my peers. Character is the one thing that I will always stand true.

What is character you may ask? Character is open for interpretation. Character is a feature or a trait. Character is a moral or value. Character is you. Abraham Lincoln once said, “Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.” In this case, you are the tree. You are held down by roots; your family, friends, morals. You have branches; different involvements, goals, hobbies that you extend yourself to. You have leaves; beauty. And yes, you do cast a shadow that is your reputation, what others perceive about you. We see these shadows and make assumptions without thinking about the source. While shadows are what we make them to be, the object (tree in this case) is the real deal. Character is the real deal. While a reputation is a pretty close indicator of what type of person you may be, your character is your definition.

As student leaders across the state of Michigan, our character is what makes MASC/MAHS ten times cooler. We are those kids who find passion in helping others. We know that without leadership, structure would not exist. We see opportunity where others see nothing. We choose to put others happiness before our own. We believe in miracles. We strive to BE better every day. We are the lucky ones.

Now, think about your own character. Would you rather cheat on a test because you forgot to study or take a failing grade and do the right thing? Would you rather stay above the influence even if your friends aren’t? Would you choose peer pressure over positive peer pressure? Would you rather give in to others or stand up for your beliefs, even if you’re standing alone? Character is a choice. Although others may see it different, just like the shadow and tree, your character is what you make it to be.

MASC/MAHS Exceptional Service Project Award

MASC/MAHS Students of the Year

While there are thousands of students that MASC/MAHS meets each year, we pause to recognize TWO hard-working and dedicated leaders each year at the State Student Conference. Each of these awards are extremely competitive, and students who are nominated on the state level should feel honored to be among such an elite group. The Patricia C. Boss Student Council Leader of the Year

This award, created by students FOR students, honors ONE exceptional graduating senior who has excelled in their student council, government, class council, or congress endeavors.

The Torchbearer Michigan Honor Society Student Leader of the Year

While acceptance to an honor society group of any kind is one of the highest honors that a student can earn in their high school career, we recognize that there are a number of students who step up to make these organizations productive and public entities of their schools and communities. The Torchbearer Award honors one exceptional high school graduating senior who has gone above and beyond not only SERVING, but helping those to grow in their chapter or group as well. Membership (in good standing) in your school honor society chapter is required, and you may not be nominated more than once for this honor in your tenure within the group.

MASC/MAHS Advisers of the Year

Student groups in Michigan excel not only due to the high-caliber of students within them, but also the guiding hand of hundreds of advisers who give their personal time and resources to an (often times) under-recognized job. MASC/MAHS hopes to remedy this by recognizing ONE adviser of the year from each of our twelve geographic centers. (Not sure which center your building falls? click here to head to the map!)A team of the MASC/MAHS Board of Delegates, members of the Advisory Committee and the Coordinator of MASC/MAHS will choose these winners based on application strength.

Of the twelve advisers selected (they can be of any sort, honor society or student council/government) the committee will select TWO (one honor society, and one student council) to be honored as the MASC/MAHS State Advisers of the Year. MASC/MAHS Principals of the Year

Great principals believe in co-curricular activities. Great student leaders have a great principal behind them. MASC/MAHS recognizes the bond between these two groups, and invites all member schools to recognize the building administrators who inspire, empower, and believe in students daily. The MASC/MAHS Principal of the Year award will be awarded to (up to) twelve administrators (one from each ) who have exemplified the standards of guiding the students within their buildings. Of these twelve, one overall principal will be chosen by the MASC/MAHS Board of Delegates, and members of the Advisory Committee to represent Michigan as the MASC/MAHS Principal of the Year. Your building must be a member of MASC/MAHS and the administrator must be a member of MASSP to be eligible for this award.

One of the greatest aspects of attending the Student State Conference is the ability to see what other leadership groups across the state are doing! We feature the BEST of the BEST presentations from our Regional CONNECT Conferences at the Student State Conference each year. We also have a number of awards that any MASC/MAHS member school would be eligible to apply for, we encourage you to check them out!

Student Presentation Showcase

Once we get into late February and early March, Regional CONNECT Conferences will be hosted across the state. Any school is eligible to submit a presentation at one of these events to be considered for acceptance to the 2012 Student State Conference. We encourage ALL schools, regardless of their past involvement to submit a presentation to a Regional CONNECT Conference. More details on presentations can be found by heading to the Regional CONNECT site. Once presenters have been invited and accepted to the conference, we will post the sessions here so that schools may see which sessions they may want to attend at the conference.

Awards

MASC/MAHS offers many awards on both an individual level, organization/group level, and building level. Head to the MASC/MAHS Awards Page to look at the offerings for 2012. Our 2011-2012 Board of Delegates have created new awards and have updated processes, so even the most seasoned of advisers/students should check out the Awards Page. Registration, Policies and Procedures

There's a TON of information available on this site! Be sure to review all of the policies and procedure information, and then proceed with registration. We hope that you will choose to join us, it will be an excellent experience for the students leaders and activity advisers in Michigan. If you have any questions about information on this site, please contact the MASC/MAHS office at 517/327-5315 during regular business hours, or email todd@mascmahs.org anytime. Please note that during registration periods email and call volumes are very high, and we will return your questions as soon as we can.

Behavior and Medical Forms

We're proud of all of the student leaders that we get to work with, however there's a time and a place for rules. In an event that may see well over 1300 participants, rules are vital. EVERY participant is required to bring with them to conference check in a completed medical/agreement form. In 2012, we have streamlined the forms together, to make it easier for you to complete, and less likely that someone will leave a piece behind. There are separate forms for students and advisers, each highlighting the responsibilities and code of conduct for each audience. Additionally, students are REQUIRED to complete the medical information section (part one) of the form, and have the entire thing verified and signed by a parent or guardian. Medical information is included in the adviser packet, and is highly suggested to complete, in case of an emergency on site. Tape these forms to your forehead, pin them to your shirt, or come up with your own way of remembering since we will not be able to grant you admission to the conference without them completed at check-in. Advisers or students caught replicating information or signatures will not be granted admission and building administrators will be contacted. NOTE: We ask that advisers/chaperones check for accuracy and completion, but do NOT collect forms, as each student will need to complete the check-in process on their own.

Adviser and Chaperone Policy

At the MASC/MAHS Student State Conference, schools are responsible for the supervision and actions of the student delegation that they bring. It is for that purpose that our organization has set the following standards in place to help ensure student safety and satisfaction in the experience.

You are required to have one paid adviser or chaperone for the first 10 (ten) students in your delegation.
Each additional 8 (eight) students require another adviser or chaperone

We encourage advisers or chaperones in attendance to be teachers or actual activity advisers of the school that they are supervising in order to maintain school standards and behavior, but this is not required. Our host schools have worked hard to put together an adviser's lineup of content that will run alongside the student schedule when students are not directly with their group (as in the case of small group activities or student showcase sessions). Otherwise, advisers and chaperones are expected to be monitoring and supervising their group at all times.

Advisers and chaperones will be required to sign responsibility agreements with their registration, and should review them carefully with their building administrators before arriving in Traverse City. Since an adviser/chaperone is responsible for the group in the case of an emergency, we ask that they adhere to the same protocol that we ask the students to model. Consuming alcohol/tobacco, leaving the conference site, or inappropriate behavior in any matter is not acceptable during the conference.

Offsite Lodging Policy

The 2012 MASC/MAHS Student State Conference is lucky to be held at the gorgeous Grand Traverse Resort, which allows our participants MANY different housing offerings. It is for that reason that we have a firm policy that all conference schools participating in the event must stay on-site. MASC/MAHS and the host schools monitor registrations as well as hotel reservation lists to make sure that everyone is taken care of and ready for the conference at the end of March. This policy has been developed with the safety and security of our students and advisers in mind first and foremost.

The sole exception to this rule exists for participating schools who live within a one-hour radius, and will be allowing to students to stay at their own homes. While this option is available, advisers and chaperones should take note that the conference program begins early and will continue late, as the majority of our participants will be staying on-site. Day rates for the conference are not available, and those who commute will be required to register for the conference as a full participant. Unregistered participants will not be accepted at the conference venue.

Hotel Policies

MASC/MAHS is proud of the reputation that we have established as an upstanding student organization that venues are HAPPY to see year after year. Our presence at the Grand Traverse Resort is welcomed due to the reputation that we have garnered over the past decade. It is for that reason that we ask advisers and chaperones to review their policies to make sure that there are no issues once arriving in Traverse City/

At NO time are male and female delegates to be in the same lodging room. This policy cannot be overridden by an adviser or chaperone. To ensure that a pleasant and safe conference is maintained, we ask that the nightly evening timeframe is respected. The FIRST violation of this rule will see the affected participants sent home from the conference.
Evening timeframes are set as an agreement between the host school, MASC/MAHS, and the Grand Traverse staff. Once the timeframe for "lights out" has elapsed, noisy or disruptive rooms will be monitored by Grand Traverse and MASC/MAHS staff. If complaints filed, warnings breached, or damage incurred causes the resort to evict your participants, MASC/MAHS will support the decision. Participants not staying at the resort will not be able to attend the remainder of the conference.
Workout facilities and the pool/spa area will only be available for use prior to conference opening and immediately following the conclusion on Monday per an agreement with the hotel. Delegates found in this area of the resort will be in violation of their participant commitment and may be asked to leave the conference.
Decisions on behalf of the Grand Traverse Resort and/or the MASC/MAHS Conference Director are final, and registration fees/hotel deposits will not be refunded. This is highlighted in both the participant and adviser agreements.

Dress Code

Each year we strive to find a balance between conference and resort atmosphere for our delegates. In 2012, you will be receiving t-shirts as a part of your registration, to be worn for certain activities throughout the event. Chippewa Valley and Dakota have asked that participants wear shirts from their home school or organization for the opening session and Saturday evening activities. Jeans will be permitted at this conference, however participants should note that the conference venue is professional, and attire should reflect that. Backless, strapless, low cut, sleeveless or mesh shirts are prohibited, as are items containing vulgar or offensive images or statements. The MASC/MAHS staff has final authority on what is deemed inappropriate and reserves the right to deny admission to a participant who is not meeting standards.

As per conference tradition, our awards banquet will occur on Sunday evening, with the closing celebration (and dance) immediately following. NO individual will be allowed access to lodging areas in between or during either of these time periods. Advisers or chaperones will be unable to return to rooms on behalf of students. Students will not have the ability to proceed past the conference center--even if accompanied. We hope that participants will find a way to honor the banquet in a business casual and dignified way while being comfortable for the remainder of the evening.

Online Registration

If your group is ready to register, you've ended up in the right spot! (Cost information is available on the conference details page). Please follow the following TWO step process to complete your group registration.

Step One: Group Guarantee
The first part of registration requires the MASC/MAHS adviser completing their group guarantee on the MASSP/MASC/MAHS online registration site. We ask that you click the link below, follow login instructions, and fill in the amount of STUDENTS and ADULTS that you will be registering for the conference. You cannot modify a registration online, simply call the MASC/MAHS office at 517/327-5315 during normal business hours. Group guarantees are due no later than Friday, March 9, 2012. After this point, registrations will be accepted as long as space allows. After this date, guaranteed numbers may not be decreased, however substitutions and additions will be accepted as space provides.MASC/MAHS will bill for the full amount in the group guarantee beginning in April, not the number of participants who arrive in Traverse City.

Step Two: Individual Information
Once you have completed your group guarantee, you will receive a confirmation email containing the link to step two of registration within one week. While only those who have completed step one may continue to step two, information you should collect from your students in advance is as follows:
-Full student/adviser name
-Unique email address and contact phone number (one email address/phone number for all participants will not be accepted)
-Home address (this is no longer required on the medical form, so a complete and accurate address for each participant is required. Simply filling in the school's address for each participant will not be accepted)
-Organization(s) represented at conference (student council, honor society, leadership class, etc.)
-Dietary restrictions and/or special needs for each participant
Step two of registration needs to be completed no later than March 16, 2012. Groups submitting their information after this date run the risk of having incomplete or inaccurate materials, which will cause a delay in their check-in.

One of the highlights of coming to a conference or event of this size is the caliber of speakers that we are able to showcase. The 2012 Student State Conference is no exception to this rule, with three nationally recognized speakers that will enlighten us throughout the three-day event. In addition, MASC/MAHS has developed a tradition of offering a service project at each Student State Conference since more than a decade ago. Keynote Speaker: Patrick Maurer

Patrick Maurer is a dynamic speaker who has already presented workshops and entertained audiences of all ages in twenty-five states, in such venues as Six Flags Magic Mountain, and to such renowned student groups like Key Club International, FBLA, DECA, and 4-H. Patrick was an active leader in his high school and went on to accept a four year scholarship at Arizona State University, where he excelled and was later named the Outstanding Male Leader of his graduating class.
After graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Communication from the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication, Patrick returned to San Jose, California to complete the Single Subject Teaching Credential Program at San Jose State University. While taking education courses, he also studied improvisational comedy for a year before becoming a cast member of Comedy Sportz San Jose where he performed family-friendly improvisational comedy for four years. Patrick taught English at a local high school constantly finding new ways to make material connect to students’ lives before leaving the classroom to create PMaurer Communication LLC.
Two of Patrick’s passions remain speaking and training. His unique blend of humor and perspective on real-life experiences continues to entertain and enrich audiences of all ages. Patrick believes that education and leadership are life long journeys—so far he has really enjoyed his path.

Don't let the acronym fool you, there are TONS of groups who are able (and do!) attend the MASC/MAHS Student State Conference. Many student council, government, and senate groups have had a long history with this event--as well as honor societies of all size and structure across Michigan. In addition, we see that leadership class groups, spirit and activity groups, peer mentoring and leadership groups, as well as service and community minded groups may benefit from the networking and ideas at the conference. While the target audience is for high schools, we welcome middle school groups who understand the nature and size of the event. (However, they should check out the 2012 Middle Level State Conference happening later in the year!)

Groups bring a variety of ages and subsets from their organization. Some groups reserve extra spots for underclassmen to inspire and motivate for the future--while others reward their upperclassmen for their hard work. Our suggestion is to bring a DIVERSE group of students who will benefit from the many aspects of the conference.

Student participation and engagement is KEY at the MASC/MAHS Student State Conference. Many schools or groups will require their advanced leaders to submit a presentation to a Regional CONNECT Conference in order to be considered to attend the state conference. Still others will require that students in attendance be an active part of their group's participation in one of our many awards and evaluation programs. Each of these processes help students to understand and engage in the experience, rather than simply seeing it ONLY as an awesome one-time experience!

Each year we make sure that the site for our MASC/MAHS Student State Conference can both hold and house our growing group for daytime activities and evening accommodations. We are fortunate to bring the event back to Traverse City for the 12th consecutive year. Read below for more information on the property, as well as directions on how to make your reservations. Please note that all conference participants are required to stay on-site, unless commuting from a one-hour radius. More information on this can be found on the policies section of the site.

About the Grand Traverse Resort

We are very fortunate to be working with the staff at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, MI (just outside of Traverse City) again in 2012. The entire staff always strives to make sure that all of our students and advisers in attendance are having an excellent and safe experience for the entirety of the conference.

A benefit of using such a large resort is the flexibility in housing such a large number of students. From multi-bedroom condos to standard hotel rooms, there are options for all groups no matter the size or budget. Read below for the room descriptions and rates that have been negotiated.

Requests should be received no later than 2/24/2012, reservations AFTER that date will be subject to availability.

About our hosts

There are certain aspects of leadership that MASC/MAHS believes to be true above all. One of those concepts is the fact that student ownership and guidance should be a part of many of our programs. It is with this sentiment that our organization works with schools all over the state to not only plan and execute--but also learn from every conference or event that we partner with. Students get the opportunity to shadow and work with professionals and gain real-world skills that set them in a class of their own among their peers. Our organization gains excellent programming and student-driven goals and experiences. It truly is something that we feel sets us apart from other student groups and organizations.

Who is "Chipota"?

If you Google "Chipota" you certainly will not be led to any links to high schools in the state of Michigan, yet MASC/MAHS is proud to be working with a group that goes by this name to host the 2012 Student State Conference--how can this be? For the first time in the history of the conference, TWO schools have collaborated to host the MASC/MAHS Student State conference. The story doesn't end here--read below to learn a little bit more about how these two schools, both from the same district, and with a long history of being rivals in their community, are coming together to create an incredible experience for the student leaders of Michigan.

From Chippewa Valley and Dakota High School

Chippewa Valley and Dakota High Schools share a long and rich tradition of involvement with MASC/MAHS. Our history starts with Chippewa Valley High School's Student Government. Former adviser, Mr. Tom Heethuis not only pioneered one of the highest quality Student Government programs at Chippewa Valley, he was the first adviser in the district to host a state conference in 1994. As the principal of Dakota High School, Tom still continues his involvement through his immense support for MASC/MAHS and the Dakota High School Student Government. The current Student Government Adviser of Dakota High School, Mrs. Melissa Belanger also has experience hosting a state conference for MASC/MAHS as the former adviser of Regina High School (host in 2001).

In 2002 and 2004 Chippewa Valley hosted two high energy and exciting Regional Coferences that raised the bar for others who would host in the future. Last year, in 2010 Dakota High School continued the tradition of excellence by hosting a very well received and highly successful Regional Conference with a dynamic theme. For 2012, both Chippewa Valley and Dakota will make MASC/MAHS history by overcoming the natural rivalry that has always existed between the two schools to be the first schools to co-host a state conference. Two great rivals have come together to form one of the strongest and most cohesive groups of student leaders with one purpose: to host a very exciting, informative, and fun-filled conference that promises to be a HEROIC experience. We hope to see you at the 2012 MASC/MAHS Student State Conference in Traverse City!

Analyze with a SWOT

It's the new year, and while many people are setting goals and resolutions in how they want to PERSONALLY come out of this year--it can also be a great time to pause and reflect on the goals of your student group as well. At MASC/MAHS, we think that these two processes go hand-in-hand, that students who are consistently striving to better themselves, will in turn continue to make their organizations, schools, communities, and world better places.

It doesn't matter if you have dedicated time in the day to teach leadership curriculum, concepts like this should be built into the management of all student leadership activities. MASC/MAHS exists to help activity advisers do just this. When a corporation or non-profit begins their fiscal year, often times they are working off of a "strategic plan" that was put into place for both the short and long-term by stakeholders. Why not use a tool that many real-world leaders have proven successful to help grow our students and leadership organizations?

Many advisers, and some students may be familiar with the acronym S.W.O.T. This model, used worldwide in many arenas shows that there are four major concepts that organizations should have in mind to make their plan of action for the future. By having the discussion and brainstorming with your group's stakeholders, you are taking part in a SWOT analysis.

The photo at right shows a basic grid that you can use to complete a SWOT analysis. The four concepts that you will discuss during this process are:
-Strengths--What is done well? What are the wins that you want to celebrate and use to keep you moving forward? Which behaviors do you want to continue?
-Weaknesses--Which things are NOT done well? Has the ball truly been dropped? If so, when and which processes caused this? Are there things that need to be looked at and re-evaluated?
-Opportunities--Where is the greatest area of growth available? Are there things that are NOT being capitalized on? Which things are falling off the table that could be beneficial?
-Threats--What will prevent success? What obstacles pose the greatest opportunity for loss?

A SWOT analysis of your organization will push your group to look at processes from a 360 degree approach to looking at the state of affairs. Rather than just looking at good and bad, you are looking at the deeper WHY are things good or bad. Instead of simply setting goals and being content with reaching (or not reaching them) you can status at ANY point to see where the best road to success will lead.

Not only does this analysis yield results for your student groups, it also poses potential to help INDIVIDUALS grow. In fact, some of the best SWOT analysis sessions often start with personal reflection on the four concepts before moving onto those of the group. This is a prime opportunity to teach students not only how to learn academically, but also to strive to be a lifelong learner about one of the largest subjects any of us study--ourselves.

We've put together a two-page resource that you can use to bring a SWOT analysis to your group. The first page allows students (or other educators) the opportunity to introduce to concepts to their own lives, and the second page brings a collaboration of where the group can contribute concepts relating to the organization.

I remember a friend of mine from a while ago who had an annoying little saying that he kept in his back pocket at all times. "If it's free, it's for me!" While at the time I thought his over-the-top cheap attitude was quite "tacky" if you will, but when looking to discuss this month's January technology topic, it seems to be the thing in my head.

The truth is--my buddy's saying is quite true when it comes to technology applications that are the most effective. Especially those in student leadership organizations like MASC/MAHS and our members. This month, I'll discuss the web-based free application WallWisher--an app that doesn't just take on one use or identity, but really could be used in a number of different ways. There are two reasons why this is timely;
1.) January is the month that many people identify with organization, record-keeping, and resolutions. It seems as if students and advisers are always looking for new ways to keep track, garner feedback, and get things in motion while not officially in meeting or business.

2.) As an organization, you will be seeing some use of WallWisher within our own site. Why not look into it now? (Examples that are already in place are with the 2012 Adviser's Conference, and the 2012 High School Student State Conference).

As in past technology articles, you know that there is much to be said about a simple app that does not require a login and password (even if it is free). WallWisher is just that--free and without need to register for limited use. The premise: an online "sticky board" where people can post short thoughts (150 characters or less), comment on others, and use a common URL for online collaboration.

You may think "why would I possibly need something like this?" However, after a bit of thought, I'm sure that your mind can be filled possibilities.
An online ride sharing board.

A simple sign-up (fundraisers, potlucks, volunteer or service projects)

A "parking lot" for ideas that others have during a meeting that the group does not want to forget

Roommate requests or search for pairings.

Feedback generator (with the ability for anonymous responses)

You could probably add MANY more activities or education-related uses if you keep thinking...

Using WallWisher

The front page for the main WallWisher site (www.wallwisher.com), is remarkably simple. You can look at a sample of another wall, watch a demo video, or get right into building your own. To start, click "build a wall" in the third blue column.

Building Your Wall

Building your wall should take no more than 5 minutes, if you have your name and photo ready to go. The questions and data that WillWisher will ask for includes:

A identifying picture or logo (.jpg, .png, or .gif with a maximum size of 512 KB). TIP: Have a Facebook profile picture for yourself, organization, or event? This should work fine! WallWisher also supplies a limited supply of stock images if you cannot find one that works.
A theme, or color scheme selection from their options
Your name and email, so that WallWisher may send you notifications about your wall.
A title for your page (simply click the text at the top of the page to re-write).

A personal URL for your wall. For example; if this was Lansing Middle School leadership we may call it "lansingleadership" in the URL bar.

Answers to the questions asked based on your preference. NOTE: Our experience with having "monitored" posts has not been good. Delays in sending the wall administrator notifications about the posts slows down the ability for people to use your wall

This page will not let you submit until ALL information is complete, accurate, and within the specifications.

Click on the green checkmark in the lower right hand side of the page when you are ready to submit. It's that simple!

Once your wall is built, you can post your URL anywhere! Put it on event websites, share it on social media, email it to your participants--ANYONE can participate in the conversation on WallWisher. Flash is required for the interactivity (i.e. to add new posts) so using certain tablets and phones may only allow the user to view the wall, rather than posting a sticky.

Double click anywhere to add your message, populate the fields, and then feel free to move your stickies around as needed. The wall administrator OR the original poster may remove their content anytime.

Costs, Policies, and Timeline

The cost for the 2012 Adviser's Conference is set at the following:

$180.00/participant for MASC/MAHS member Schools
$220.00/participant for non-member schools

Registration covers Thursday reception, Friday breakfast and lunch, admission, activity materials, and a take-home folder from the day. To guarantee space please complete your online registration no later than January 27, 2012.

Cancellations will not be accepted after the registration deadline. For multi-day conferences such as this, substitutions may be made anytime, but after the deadline, your building will be invoiced for the full amount.
MASC/MAHS invoices schools monthly for uncollected funds. We encourage participants to bring any payment outstanding the day of the conference to eliminate confusion.
Payment will be accepted via cash, check or money order anytime. Checks should be made out to MASSP Student Leadership and may be mailed to the office or brought in-person to the conference.
Credit or debit card payments may be made over the phone at 517-327-5315 (Monday-Thursday 8a-5p, Friday 8a-4p). Please allow up to 10 business days for processing of phone payments.
