Syllabus:
Fall 2008
The purpose of Student Leadership is to empower you with the opportunity to learn and use your leadership skills to actualize the positive potential available from your academic and co-curricular talents.
1st Semester Goals:
1. To recognize the functions of the total school program and better understand the students’ role as a leader.
2. To identify the groups that function within the school and community.
3. To work effectively in groups.
4. To recognize different viewpoints that students, teachers and administrators have regarding school problems.
5. To recognize the value of goals in achieving short-term and long-term results.
6. To develop techniques of leading, delegating responsibility, and following through with projects.
Expectations and Procedures:
A. Manage the everyday operation of the Brieske Room:
1. Help committees with projects.
2. Paint signs.
3. Make deliveries and copies.
4. Sell tickets (4th hour).
5. Update bulletin boards and showcases.
6. Clean showcases.
7. Prepare the monthly calendar.
8. Type morning announcements (5th hour).
9. Keep Brieske Room neat and clean (including paint supplies).
10. Organize mail for senators.
11. Manage the “Student Activities” page of the SHS web site.
B. Keep a daily log that details how you use your time. The “task” section should include details of what you have accomplished during the hour. Also, fill out the “message” section with any duties that other leadership hours might help with. These should be updated daily. They will be checked and graded on the following dates: 9/26, 10/31, 12/5 and 1/16.
*Please do not write any rude or obscene comments in the leadership log.
C. Complete a Pet Project. A Pet Project is something you do that improves the school. It can be related to one of the following:
School Spirit
Learning
Beautification
Something that makes Stevenson a more positive place
Be creative!
Due: 12/5
D. “The Great Discovery” Assignment – A self-evaluation activity to be used to develop a personal mission statement. Due 9/19
E. In addition to the above, the following will also be used to determine your
grade:
Problem Solving Skills
Creativity
Initiative
Task Management and Completion
F. FINAL EXAM - Write a paper that describes two of your most positive leadership skills and one skill that needs improvement. Your paper must be 2 pages in length and include specific examples. Please type and give it to Mrs. Harb by the end of your Final Exam Period.
Second Semester 2008-2009

5. To develop a working knowledge and clear understanding of parliamentary procedure.
6. To recognize the value of goals in achieving short-term and long-term results.
7. To develop techniques of leading, delegating responsibility, and following through with projects.
8. Illustrate, by concrete examples, the importance of leadership in today’ world.
9. Demonstrate a working knowledge of parliamentary procedure.
10. Identify 3 leadership types and explain the differences between them.
General Outline of Course Content:
I. Basic Techniques and Skills of Leadership
A. Define Leadership (characteristics and qualities of)
B. Leadership Roles and Personal Leadership Style
C. Areas of Responsibility
D. Skills and Techniques of Leadership (parliamentary procedure, planning agendas, reporting, minute taking, leading discussions)
II. Organizational Structures and Styles
A. Styles of Leading
B. Council Organization (constitutions, school policy as related to student government, Council affiliations such as Board of Education and PTSA, structure of local school administration)
C. Record Keeping
D. Budgeting and Bookkeeping
E. Committee System including reports
F. Assessment of School Climate
G. Techniques and methods for planning and organizing assemblies, rallies and social events
III. Group Processing and Personal Development
A. Communication (public speaking, written, meetings, with school administration)
B. Community Service
C. Publicity
D. School Spirit and Morale
E. Review of all Co-Curricular Programs (handbook revisions)
F. Problem Solving
G. Decision Making (includes elections and voting procedures)

10. Manage the “Student Activities” page of the SHS Website.
B. Keep a daily log that details how you use your time. These will be checked and graded on a random basis.
C. Attend a meeting of the Livonia Board of Education or Stevenson PTSA
Meeting and write a summary of events and review.
D. Study at least 3 different topics among the 3 areas of course content listed
above in the syllabus.
Use online resources or resources provided for you.
Write out a general description of the course content topic you are studying.
Develop an activity or program related to your topic to be included in a leadership lesson binder. This binder will be used by future leaders to use as a resource.
