Board Campaigning Guidelines

Each year at the State Conference, students that are running for positions on the MASC/MAHS Board of Delegates are allowed to campaign at the State Conference. The guidelines below will be strictly enforced. It is not mandatory that candidates campaign in all of the areas listed below, however, those that desire to must adhere to the guidelines below. Running a negative campaign in any way or not staying within the guidelines will result in a candidate being dismissed from the elections.

Any questions regarding the guidelines below should be directed to Todd Burlingham, Coordinator of Student Leadership: 517.327.5315 or todd@mymassp.com

All candidates running for an MASC/MAHS Center/Region Representative position are required to:

  • ...give a BRIEF introduction at the first Center/Region meeting (Saturday Evening) at the State Conference. This introduction should simply provide the rest of the Center with your name, school, and a quick sentence about why you would like to run for the Center position.
  • ...prepare and give a speech (no more than 3 minutes) at the 2nd Center/Region meeting (typically Sunday afternoon or evening). This speech allows you to explain more about who you are, why you desire the position you are running for and why you would be the best candidate for that position

The following outlines the OPTIONAL campaigning a candidate may choose to do at the State Conference.

Candidates seeking MASC/MAHS Board Positions that have turned in a completed application by the stated due date may:

  • ...utilize their blog on the MASC/MAHS website to promote their candidacy. Blog posts must be clean and appropriate.
  • ...utilize other websites that are not affiliated with MASC/MAHS to promote their candidacy. Websites should be clean, appropriate and relevant to the election. These websites can be linked to from within the candidate's MASC/MAHS blog.
  • ...submit a campaign flyer. We ask that ALL candidates take part in at least this part of the campaigning, however, it is not required. Create a 1-sided document in black and white that contains at least the following information: first and last name, school name and Center/Region you are running for. We strongly suggest you also include information highlighting your experiences with MASC/MAHS, other leadership groups, your leadership experiences within your school and/or community, etc... This campaign flyer must be emailed to MASC/MAHS no later than 2 days prior to the State Conference. Email your flyer to todd@mymassp.com. Please make sure your document is in one of the following formats: .doc, .pdf, .pages, .jpg, .gif. We will copy the necessary number of flyers for your Center/Region and your current Board Representative will pass them out to your Center/Region at the first meeting during the State Conference. These campaign flyers, in addition to the speeches you will be asked to do in your Center Meeting, help the rest of your Center/Region know more about you.
  • ...bring no more than 200 items to pass out to students at the conference. Since only YOUR Center/Region votes on your candidacy, please only pass items out to those within your Center/Region. Items can ONLY be handed out the FIRST DAY of the State Conference (Saturday). Acceptable items include candy, pins, stickers, etc... If you are unsure if your item is acceptable, contact Todd at MASC/MAHS for clarification. If you choose to pass out an item that could then wind up on the floor (wrappers, stickers - anything really!), it is YOUR responsibility to pick up the pieces. Items that you pass out must contain on them the following information: First Name, School, Center/Region number. Again, items can ONLY be passed out on Saturday. Candidates passing items out on Sunday will be removed from the ballot. We do ask that you refrain from passing out gum. While it is not against the rules, to respect the facility we are using, no gum please!
  • ...set up a trifold-display board or other display using no more than the standard size of a trifold-display board. Students that wish to set up a display must bring it to the MASC/MAHS Board during Registration. They will instruct you on where to set up your display. The display must contain at least the following information: first and last name, school name, Center/Region you are running for. Any other information must be school appropriate.
  • ...have up to 20 students (and no more), wear a t-shirt supporting your candidacy. Students must be from YOUR school and YOUR SCHOOL ONLY and no more than 20 students can display shirts supporting your candidacy. Campaign shirts can ONLY be worn on Saturday.
